Are you in the middle of a summer pregnancy? First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy! Being pregnant during the summer may not always be easy, but it can also be really great. I am currently pregnant with our third child and due in August. Our second was born in August, and our first was born in October. So, needless to say, I’ve spent three summers pregnant. While I always appreciate the rare rain shower or cooler temperatures that may find their way to Texas in the hot months, I try not to let the high temperatures take away from the joy that comes along with the anticipation of a new baby’s birth.
Below you’ll find ten of my top tips for beating the heat and surviving a summer pregnancy.
10 Tips for Surviving the Summer While Pregnant
- Stay hydrated. Drink a lot of water. The Institute of Medicine recommends pregnant women drink 2. 4 liters or 10 cups of water daily. Get a cute, new water bottle, and drink up.
- Dress comfortably. Two of my favorite things to wear during a summer pregnancy are dresses and flip flops. They are comfortable, cute, and cooler than wearing jeans or running shoes. Don’t forget your sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen when outside.
- Travel to a cooler place. If you’re looking to get away one last time before baby is born, consider traveling somewhere cooler than home. It may be a good summer to skip the beach and head to the mountains. Be sure to avoid any areas of the world where travel is not recommended for pregnant women.
- Take care of yourself. Take your prenatal vitamins, wear sunscreen and bug spray, and minimize time in the heat and sun, especially during the hottest part of the day.
- Go for a swim. Swimming is such a great activity for pregnant women because the water can make you feel so much lighter, while also helping to relieve aches and pains. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists considers swimming while pregnant as safe.
- Take your exercise routine inside. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends exercising in a temperature-controlled room to avoid overheating, especially on very hot or humid days. Be sure and talk with your healthcare provider before starting an exercise routine.
- Continue prenatal care. Attend all of your appointments so your health care provider can continue to monitor your health and the health of your baby.
- Pamper yourself. Schedule in some relaxation with a pedicure or an afternoon at the spa.

Pregnancy is a temporary stage in life, and soon, you’ll meet your newest little family member. Take care of yourself, splurge a little, and most importantly, remember to have fun!
